Additional Aspects of Hospital Pharmacy Training Programmes

Base hospital

Registration assessment preparation
Support for the registration assessment (formerly known as registration examination) is provided at the base hospital. Pass rates of hospital based trainees are consistently above the national average pass rate.

Regular support from tutor and other pharmacists
Regular meetings are encouraged with tutors and trainers to receive and provide feedback regarding training and progress.

Project management
All hospital pharmacy pre-registration trainee pharmacists undertake an audit project which enables them to develop a wide range of skills e.g. planning and organisation, time management, problem solving skills, report writing skills. Each regional pharmacy training service organises a project awards event and pre-registration trainee pharmacists are encouraged to enter their projects for the chance to win a prize.

Rotational training and in-house training sessions
Many hospitals arrange in-house study days or training sessions which complement the rotational training provided and the regional courses and study days attended.

Regional training programmes

Courses and study days
Courses and study days are organised by NHS pharmacy training services for hospital pre-registration trainee pharmacists in a similar geographical area. For more information about these services, see the maps and accompanying regional pages in the booklet or on the website.

Features of regional courses and study days

  • Complement rotational training and in-house training sessions provided at the base hospital
  • Training is delivered in an environment which provides peer support, networking and lots of fun
  • Topics are linked to pharmacy practice and the pre-registration performance standards and registration assessment syllabus
  • Topics include those that are best covered in a group or require specialist input not readily available at the base hospital e.g.
    • First aid training
    • Responding to symptoms
    • Pharmaceutical calculations
    • Drug Tariff
    • Registration Assessment preparation and mock assessment
  • Each regional pharmacy training service organises a project awards event and trainees are encouraged to enter their project for the chance to win a prize
